Moxibustion

Moxibustion is the burning of Moxa (mugwort) along meridians or on acupuncture points.

The most common use for Moxa is for deficiency conditions (digestion, genecology) or for cold pain syndromes (ie, arthritis, injury)

Moxa helps to internally warm these areas to relieve the deficiency.

Our practitioners may send you home with a Moxa stick to wave over a certain acupuncture point or meridian for 10-15min per day.

Cupping

The traditional form of cupping involved heating glass cups with fire and using the heat to suction them on to the body.

Instead of pushing down on the tissue like massage, the cups actually pull up on the tissue. This helps to break up stagnation in the body and pull it to the surface to release the toxins. The more stagnation the more pain or discomfort in the body- this is where the bruising can occur. The more stagnation the deeper purple in colour the skin can turn.

The cups can be left stationary on the body or moved along the meridian lines, which is called moving cupping.

Acupuncture

How we see acupuncture has evolved.

The original Chinese pictographs for acupoints indicated that there were holes in the skin through which qi energy could flow. Helping to manipulate and harmonize this energy flow is how we heal.

A western view is that Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. Through this release of chemicals acupuncture helps to naturally stimulate your bodies own innate mechanisms of healing.

In the newest research for acupuncture we have been able to actually see electrodermal activity at the acupoints. This has shown us acupuncture affects not only on the CNS but also the circulatory system and endocrine system.

Acupuncture Points

Almost all acupuncture points are located on the meridian pathways (outside of the extra points.) Each acupuncture point is a cluster of more concentrated blood and qi along the entire meridian.

Over acupunctures 3000+ year history different points have been proven over time to work at healing different imbalances in the body.

Our body starts to show disease when there is too much or too little going to these important organs and pathways in the body.

Acupuncture helps to regulate and correct this for normal smooth flow.

Meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Meridians are energy pathways that run through out the body. If you want to conceptualize them they are similar to our circulatory system or nervous system.

Each meridian is connected to a different organ. (Ie, Kidney, heart, liver, etc.) Most of the acupuncture points are located on these meridian pathways.

When we instruct you to use essential oils on an acupuncture point we always tell you to rub before and after the point. This is to further stimulate more of the meridian for some extra help for that organ.

Ways to Connect with your Breath

breathwork with Leslie

This is the season of the Lung and the season to connect with you breath. No matter what activity you are doing, move your body with your breath.
While you work, while you walk, while you move, pay attention the way you breathe.

Yoga can help you become more mindful of your breathing as it connects all movements back to breath.

Breathwork is another way to begin paying closer attention to your breath and the way it affects your body as a breathwork utilizes continual, intentional breath patterns as a way to heal, release + transform stagnant emotions. Breathwork can also help regulate your nervous system.

Carry this over in everyday activities - how do you breathe while working or watching tv?
Your breath is a central part of your everyday.

Acupressure Point to Help with Coughing

If you are experiencing a cough, asthma, allergies or a sore throat, point Lung 9 (Great Abyss) can help alleviate these symptoms.

LU 9 is located on the inner side crease of the wrist, on the thumb side. Press into this point and rub up and down the meridian line. For even greater benefit, you can use eucalyptus essential oil to stimulate this point as the herb naturally helps open up the lungs.

LU 9 not only helps ease cough and asthma + allergy symptoms, it also promotes the function of the lungs and nourishes the heart by calming the mind and insomnia.

Herb To Help With Congestion

Eucalyptus is a wonderful herb that opens up the lungs and can help deepen your breath.

Eucalyptus creates more ease to breathe and clears blockages of mucus or phlegm. It is a wonderful aid if you are experiencing congestion.
Use eucalyptus essential oil on Lung 9 (located on the inner side crease of the wrist on thumb side) and run it in a diffuser at night while you sleep.

Hanging fresh eucalyptus in your shower is also beneficial.

Lung Season + Grief

We are now in the season of the Lung. The emotion of the lungs is grief. This season is all about feeling it. Sit in it. And more importantly let it go. The lungs paired organ is the Large Intestine - the organ of letting go.

Plants are dying and shedding what they no longer need in order for a rebirth in the spring.

What can you let go of?

What are your lungs telling you?

Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture can help you process feelings of grief. The collective also offers other modalities that can help you process grief such as breathwork (somatically helps you move through the emotion) and hypnotherapy (helps you mentally process the emotion.)

Fall is the season of the Lung

With the Fall Equinox, we have officially entered Autumn and the season of the LUNG.

Lung Meridian

The lung is responsible for respiration (inhalation and exhalation) and our Wei qi (defensive qi). The lungs are our first line of defense against external pathogens. Hence why fall is often the cold and flu season. This is when our lungs either feast or famine.

The orifice the lungs correspond with is the skin. If the lungs are weak there can be a rise in skin conditions, acne or sensitivity.

Treating TMJ Dysfunction + Headaches with Massage

Do you find that you carry a lot of tension in your jaw? You may be experiencing TMJ dysfunction.

The temporomandibular joint acts like a sliding hinge and connects your jawbone to your skull on each side. When there is excessive strain on the TMJ, you may experience:

  • pain or tenderness of your jaw

  • aching pain in and around your ear

  • difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

  • aching facial pain

  • locking of the TMJ, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

  • headaches

Our RMT, Cyndi offers a treatment designed specifically to treat TMJ dysfunctions and headaches.

Focusing on massaging the upper back, pec’s, neck, face, scalp and TMJ area and sometimes may include massaging the muscles inside your mouth (optional), this treatment helps to reduce jaw pain and headaches while restoring balance in your muscles and increasing circulation.

This treatment will help your bodies posture, jaw pain, bruxism, whiplash and clenching. After addressing all the areas needed, the remaining time will be spend on the rest of your back. This type of treatment can be a game changer for those that carry a lot of tension in their jaw.

Supporting yourself through the transition into fall

As we enter September and the cooler weather begins, we are also entering a transition period from summer to fall.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, transitional periods are ruled by the spleen. The spleen governs over digestion, our muscles and the storage of blood throughout our body. Emotionally, the spleen is connected to overthinking and worry.

It is an important time to be kind to your body. Be aware of how you are moving your body, accept things you can and cannot change.

Let your body feel the transition from the pull towards cooling foods to the warmth needed for the cooler temperatures. Soup, steamed veggies instead of raw, less fresh fruit and more root vegetables, and of course the fan favourite pumpkin spice.

If you find yourself feeling out of sorts, anxious or uneasy during this time, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can help ease the transition between seasons.

Cooling Foods

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is understood that food has either cooling or warming characteristics. During the hot summer days, we can help cool our body down internally by eating cooling foods.

Some perfect cooling foods to help regulate in the summer heat are:

  • Watermelon

  • Lemon

  • Apple

  • Pineapple

  • Summer squash

  • Radish

  • Zucchini

  • Spinach

  • Cucumber

It's the perfect time of year to eat plenty of salads, and enjoy the juiciness of fruit.

In addition to these cooling foods, mint is a wonderfully cooling herb. If you grow fresh mint in your garden, you can eat it straight from the vine!

Watermelon + mint infused water is a delicious way to stay hydrated and reap the cooling benefits of both watermelon and mint.

Acupoint for Nausea + more

Pericardium 6, PC6 - Inner pass is located on the inside of the arm, 2 finger lengths from the wrist, in-between the 2 tendons. This point calms the mind, supports the heart, surpasses pain in chest and stomach.

A great point to use for nausea, vomiting or an upset stomach.

buddha’s triangle

Paired with Heart 7 and Lung 9 (pictured with PC6) to form Buddha’s triangle these 3 points are incredible for anxiety, insomnia and stress relief.

Watch out for summer heat!

heat stroke

It's been a hot one in Calgary so far and we're only half-way through the summer! Unfortunately, heat can cause heat stroke. Heat stroke can be nasty and symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, dizziness, whole body heaviness or heaviness in the arms and legs.

To support yourself and protect from heat stroke, drink plenty of water! The addition of electrolytes or pink Himalayan salt will help ensure your body stays hydrated.

Spend time in water - Taking a dip in the pool or river is not just a refreshing summer time activity, immersion in water can help your body temperature regulate on a hot day.

Wear a hat - We have some cute The Way themed swag to help you keep you cool ;)

Eat watermelon - both the fruit (xi gua) and seeds (xi gua ren) are used to clear summer heat from the body.

Benefits of Lavender

Lavender is the perfect compliment to heart season.

benefits of lavender

Lavender helps bring about a sense of calm, and lavender essential oil pairs perfectly with the point Heart 7 (found on the inside crease of the wrist, pinkie side) as Heart 7 helps calm the mind, clear anxiety + irritability. You can rub the essential oil on the point and along the heart meridian line.

If you are feeling restless during these longer summer days, lavender can help you ground. Diffusing lavender essential oil can help with nervousness, irritability, insomnia, restlessness and high blood pressure.

Since summer is the time the flowers bloom, lavender is more readily available. Fresh lavender bundles in the home are a wonderful way to benefit from the calming power of lavender.
